poetry diary

I rhyme to see myself, to set the darkness echoing. (Seamus Heaney, from Personal Helicon)

Battlefield

Houses grey, with holes.
Smoke rising for a week,
until the rain comes.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is battlefield.

At night, on a summer beach

I hear the waves waltz;
gently dancing sea with stones,
embracing the beach.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is waltz.

Dinosaur trails

Where footprints end
the sand stirs softly, borne by
autumn winds.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is footprint.

Paper boat

A happy child sleeps,
while the last of the tall ships
floats off with the ducks.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is paper boat.

Summer’s end

Falling rose petals,
lull exhausted earth to sleep,
at summer’s end.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is sleep.

Quantum physics in Leamington

Next door’s small black cat
vanishes every summer;
quantum paradox?

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is paradox (I found this very tough). Schrödinger’s Cat is a famous paradox in quantum physics involving a black cat which is neither alive nor dead. Our neighbours have two (sometimes..).

Young love

Two people in spring,
like hummingbirds, edging
towards their first kiss.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is hummingbird.

The new father

Afterwards, driving
on summer roads, he felt
consumed by love.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is birth. Some feelings are unforgettable. My daughter is 16 now.

Edgehill

Turf hides many tales,
green where armies fought, but the
corn is glorious.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is glory. Edgehill was a battle in the English Civil War, fought close to where I live.

Autumn flames

Autumn lights the leaves;
trees flaming red-gold, smoke-soft,
until the first frost.

——-

For haiku heights September challenge. Today’s prompt is lights, and I saw a tree half-turned to red beside the road this morning.
