poetry diary

I rhyme to see myself, to set the darkness echoing. (Seamus Heaney, from Personal Helicon)

Month: September, 2013

City life

Rain on my windscreen;
crooked blue and white light trails –
sirens in the night.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘crooked’. That’s it for this year – it’s been fun and challenging as always. Thanks to all at HH for the prompts and comments.

Storm

A child’s eye widens;
jagged sky bites writhing Earth.
Hold my hand.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘mother’.

Hill country

Amongst rocks
hardened by sunlight,
grass pillows for sheep.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘pillow’.

The Shard

Autumn suns rising
in ten thousand mirrors,
glinting like fools’ gold.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘gold’. I’m in London for two days, staying near London Bridge and ‘the Shard’ skyscraper. I’m not a great fan of the far too powerful and short-sighted UK banking sector.

Fish and chips by the sea

Chill north wind,
gulls diving after trawlers –
salt on my tongue.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘salt’.

Den in the forest

Dark ivy binds roots;
dank soil seeps from cold rocks.
Spell-breaking, a child laughs.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘den’.

Endangered

Bamboo shoots,
striving for life and light,
feed weighty pandas.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘strive’.

Autumn clues

A fallen acorn,
smooth as polished oak –
a squirrel hides it.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘clue’.

Weekend

Sunday evening light –
birch leaf falling,
senses Monday’s approach.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘Sunday’.

The Black Country

Silent factories –
cold chimneys with lonely weeds.
Gala Bingo.

——–

For September Haiku Heights  – today’s prompt is ‘black’. Coincidentally, today I was in the Black Country, which was the birthplace of the industrial revolution in the UK (but like many similar places around the world) is currently awaiting a renaissance.
